In our last newsletter we updated on the visit in June to Freetown with the ENERGICA consortium. This ENERGICA consortium stimulates partnerships between technology providers and enables these technologies to be deployed in African communities.
The visit showed real insights into the local situation around food waste and at the same time it made it very clear how positive impact through Waste Transformers biodigesters on the ground in the city.
At the moment of writing, the Waste Transformer is on its way to Freetown, Sierra Leone. It involved preparing the technology in the Netherlands. Before each container is shipped, each container is packed and made ready for sailing the oceans.
The food waste from the local community and businesses will be collected and brought to this Waste Transformer to produce clean energy. A steady source of electricity is vital for people in Freetown. Sierra Leone has one of the lowest rates of electricity access in the world.
“It is very energizing to see everything coming together in Freetown. The placement of the next Waste Transformer, the local job creation impacting real lives, and to be able to eliminate the devastating climate impact of food waste being dumped on landfill emitting greenhouse gases,” – Hugo Hoekstra, Senior Business Developer overlooking the ENERGICA project.
In Q4-2024 the next Waste Transformer will become operational. With another consortium partner, the energy generated by food waste will co-power a water cleaning system to produce clean potable water and to improve the people’s access to clean drinking water.
